NIHR Participates in the Agenda of the Round Table between the European Parliament and NHRIs

12 May 2022

A number of National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) Secretariat-General staff participated in the agenda of the Round Table between the European Parliament and National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) on “EU Guidelines on Human Rights Defenders”, which was held via video conference on 12 May 2022, organized by the European Parliament with the support of the Global Alliance for National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI).

A number of NHRIs representatives participated in the Round Table, for the purpose of reviewing how the EU Guidelines on Human Rights Defenders are implemented, document expertise and good practices regarding those principles, assess their impact on human rights defenders and protect them from the perspective of the work of NHRIs.

It is worth noting that the European Union Guidelines on Human Rights Defenders, adopted by the EU Council on June 2004, are a set of principles aimed at strengthening the work of the European Union in relation to the rights of human rights defenders, and which are aimed at supporting special procedures in the United Nations through the work of the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders, so that these principles in their entirety are a unified policy among Member States towards the promotion and protection of the rights of human rights defenders within the framework of the EU.
